New Bern, NC is one of the most friendly towns in the south. Also, according to several printed news sources, it is also NC's most romantic town. The historic downtown area is bordered by water in almost island fashion (although New Bern is not an island). One of the best kept secrets of the south, New Bern is quickly showing up on travel radars. We are not sure how much longer this town will be a secret. Rooted in rich colonial and civil war history, New Bern is NC's second oldest town. Strolling through town, you will find old, restored colonial homes, historic churches and buildings, trees cloaked with spanish moss, the pharmacy where Pepsi Cola was founded, a cannon from the Revolutionary war half buried in the sidewalk, and of course a horse and carriage touring service. The restaurants are second to none. You can expect great seafood because living off the rivers, sound, and ocean is part of our history. If you are not a big fan of seafood, try the downtown Mennonite restaurant, Baker's Square. Stroll in and out of the quaint shops. Don't forget to visit the Life is good Genuine Neighborhood Shop on Middle St. Life is so good in New Bern, the Life is good shirts are a favorite among the locals.
